2026/01/29 08:57

From humbly “learning from the world” to confidently “advancing with the World,” the past two decades of Zhongda Chuangyuan have been a relentless journey of eschewing impetuosity, adhering to scientific rigor, and achieving success through systematic excellence.

[Editor’s Note] Amid the new wave of technological revolution and industrial transformation, China’s machine tool industry is transitioning from a phase of technological catch-up to one of innovation-driven leadership. To explore pathways for high-quality development in the sector, the editorial team of the World Manufacturing Technology and Equipment Market (WMEM) publication by the China Machine Tool Industry Association has launched a systematic survey on enterprise transformation and upgrading, under the theme “Staying True to Core Values While Achieving Breakthroughs.” This interview series focuses on selected machine tool manufacturers and functional-component suppliers, offering an in-depth analysis of their initiatives and achievements in areas such as R&D innovation and quality management. By examining how these companies strike a balance between long-term technological accumulation and short-term market responsiveness, how they overcome barriers in core components, and how they build sustainable innovation ecosystems, we aim to provide the industry with replicable development models and to document the continuous breakthroughs made by Chinese machine tool firms as they move upmarket toward the mid- to high-end segments.

CNC machines for spiral bevel gears are hailed as the “ceiling” of the machine-tool industry. This high-end equipment, which integrates mathematical modeling, mechanical design, control algorithms, and manufacturing processes, has long been dominated by a handful of European and American firms in terms of its core technologies—particularly the source code for its control systems and its core algorithms.

In Changsha, Hunan Province, a company called Hunan Zhongda Chuangyuan CNC Equipment Co., Ltd. has spent two decades relentlessly breaking through barriers on this challenging path. Today, it has become one of only a handful of enterprises worldwide that master the core technologies for high-end CNC spiral bevel gear machining centers, and is the only domestic firm capable of achieving a fully closed-loop capability—encompassing design and calculation, machining, inspection, and adjustment—for both of China’s two principal spiral bevel gear tooth profiles: cycloidal equal-height teeth and arc-contracting teeth. From crossing industries to break monopolies, and from catching up to keeping pace with global leaders, Zhongda Chuangyuan’s journey embodies a humble yet unwavering commitment to “learning from the world,” as well as a profound sense of responsibility and dedication to “moving forward together with the world.”

Strategic Starting Point: Cross-Industry Expansion, Focusing on High-End Manufacturing

The story of Zhongda Chuangyuan began with a strategic transformation. After its parent company, Chuangyuan Group, achieved success in the real estate sector, founder Li Guosheng began to ponder the company’s future and its intrinsic value. Deep down, he has always held a strong entrepreneurial conviction: “We should pursue ventures that we are passionate about and that enable us to compete on the global stage.” He firmly believes that the real economy—centered on industry—is the very foundation of national competitiveness, and as “ Industrial mother machine Machine tools—particularly high-end CNC spiral bevel gear machines, which represent the highest technological barriers—are strategic frontiers that must be conquered.

In 2004, following an exhaustive feasibility study, Li Guosheng made a highly challenging decision: to found Zhongda Chuangyuan and focus on developing fully CNC spiral bevel gear machining centers—a field that was virtually untapped in China at the time and characterized by extremely high technical complexity. “Only by choosing the most difficult path can we ensure that there will be no competitors in the future,” Li Guosheng explained his rationale at the time. However, starting a business is no easy feat. From scratch, the company confronted multiple daunting challenges, including a weak technological foundation, a severe shortage of specialized talent, and an underdeveloped industrial supply chain. The initial R&D team numbered fewer than 20 people, forcing them to begin their exploration from the very basics—gear meshing theory and computational methods. Despite sustained, substantial investment, market returns failed to materialize quickly, plunging the company into a severe operational crisis and bringing it to the brink of collapse.

Building the Foundation of the System: Forging the R&D Management Core through “Scientific Accumulation and Civilized Manufacturing”

Faced with an existential crisis, Li Guosheng did not retreat; instead, he rolled up his sleeves and took direct leadership in a profound transformation centered on building a scientific R&D management system. He recognized that isolated technological breakthroughs could not sustain long-term competitiveness and that it was imperative to establish a management framework capable of systematically accumulating knowledge, scientifically codifying processes, and turning uncertainty into certainty. This framework was distilled by him into the guiding principle of “scientific accumulation for civilized manufacturing.”

First, we have established a distinctive R&D architecture that places theory at the forefront. In contrast to the industry’s common short-sighted approach of prioritizing applications over theory, Zhongda Chuangyuan has set up the Gear Theory Research Laboratory, recruiting PhDs in mathematics and mechanics to focus on fundamental meshing principles and algorithmic models, thereby enshrining an R&D philosophy that emphasizes not only “knowing what” but also “knowing why.” At the same time, laboratories specializing in software and electrical systems, spindle technology, and gear testing have been developed in coordinated synergy, creating a comprehensive closed-loop spanning basic research, core component development, and full-machine validation.

Secondly, it involves driving process reengineering based on data. Li Guosheng relocated his office from the Chuangyuan Group headquarters to the Zhongda Chuangyuan factory premises and, over several months, spearheaded the establishment of a comprehensive management system covering design, R&D, production, quality, process engineering, human resources, finance, procurement, and other functions.

In terms of systematizing technology, we have achieved end-to-end data traceability across all process steps, quantifying, recording, and analyzing hundreds of parameters for critical processes such as spindle assembly. This has enabled the creation of a fully traceable process database, transforming micron-level precision control from reliance on the “master craftsman’s intuition” to a reproducible, standardized procedure. We have also developed an intelligent manufacturing cloud platform to enable data centralization in the cloud and facilitate remote collaboration.

In terms of organizational institutionalization, we have established the principle that “processes take precedence over individuals,” granted the process management department a veto power over design proposals to ensure manufacturing feasibility, and put in place a closed-loop improvement mechanism that links market issues to technical root-cause analysis and iterative R&D.

In terms of the scientific approach to cognitive science, we proactively manage “uncertainty” by subjecting new products to long-term, full-load testing under extreme operating conditions, thereby eliminating potential issues before market launch. We also implement a rigorous tiered management system for the supply chain to control performance variability at the material source. In addition, we have institutionalized corrective mechanisms—for example, by developing algorithmic models such as thermal deformation compensation—to dynamically correct machining deviations in real time.

“Without a solid foundation of scientific accumulation, the notion of ‘overtaking on a curve’ is nothing but empty rhetoric,” Li Guosheng concluded. This “Civilized Manufacturing” system—centered on data, processes, and knowledge accumulation—has laid a robust foundation for Zhongda Chuangyuan’s subsequent comprehensive breakthroughs.

Core Breakthrough: Dual-Engine Drive Enables a Leap from Catching Up to Standing Shoulder to Shoulder

Leveraging its long-standing expertise in the “Civilized Manufacturing” system, Zhongda Chuangyuan has not only achieved a series of landmark breakthroughs in the helical bevel gear sector but has also made rapid strides in the emerging field of cylindrical gear machining centers, thereby demonstrating through concrete results the core competitive edge of high-end manufacturing.

First, a closed-loop theoretical framework for bevel gears has been established, enabling fully digital closed-loop manufacturing of bevel gears. The company has independently developed the CHIMES design, calculation, and analysis software, which creates a comprehensive theoretical closed loop spanning gear design, machine tool setup, cutting-tool parameter optimization, simulation analysis, and tooth-surface reconditioning—covering all stages from gear design to final adjustment. This allows precise control over arbitrary contact zones and meshing performance. Building on this foundation, a fully digital manufacturing closed loop has been formed, integrating milling, grinding, lapping, and inspection across the entire process chain—from design and machining to measurement and adjustment. As a result, Zhongda Chuangyuan has become the first enterprise to independently achieve both theoretical and manufacturing closed loops for two different helical-bevel-gear tooth systems.

Second, the company has mastered dry cutting technology for bevel gears and solved the global grinding challenges of reliability, consistency, and stability in high-precision gear grinding. In 2011, Zhongda Chuangyuan was the first to implement a green and highly efficient dry-cutting process for spiral bevel gears and launched a complete set of equipment. Today, this equipment holds over 90% of the domestic market share and has been recognized as a “National Manufacturing Single-Champion,” setting the industry benchmark. In 2022, Zhongda Chuangyuan developed and commissioned the YKA2030 vertical-type bevel-gear grinding machine, whose machining performance is fully comparable to imported equipment, with machining accuracy consistently at DIN Grade 2 and a 45-point reverse adjustment capability of within 0.002 mm, thereby meeting the processing needs of the entire industrial chain.

Third, the company has successfully pioneered a new market segment for cylindrical gear machining centers. In response to the urgent demand from the new-energy vehicle industry for high-end gear-processing equipment, Zhongda Chuangyuan has launched the H30D dual-station CNC worm-wheel grinding machine. After three years of market validation, its gear-grinding products have demonstrated superior tooth profile and helix accuracy. Ripple It has achieved stable batch-to-batch consistency within 1 μm, and its machining performance is comparable to that of world-class equipment. Currently, orders for this equipment far exceed supply, making it a core competitive advantage for Zhongda Chuangyuan in capturing emerging markets.

Future Vision: End-to-End Empowerment Driving the Future of Industry

Today, Zhongda Chuangyuan has transcended the role of a mere equipment supplier to become a comprehensive partner that empowers customers throughout the entire gear-manufacturing value chain. The company has established a full-lifecycle service system that spans demand alignment, process optimization, and technological upgrading, deeply integrating into customers’ growth trajectories and helping them build differentiated competitive advantages.

Looking ahead, Zhongda Chuangyuan will focus on “technological iteration” and “capacity expansion,” continuously advancing the high-precision and multifunctional integration of its products. The company will invest in R&D of key equipment such as honing machines and internal gear grinding machines, and develop integrated “machining-plus-inspection” solutions tailored to industry needs, thereby systematically building core competitiveness for the international market.
